Enjoy The Little Things

Well 2013 has been an interesting year to say the least. Ups & downs, back & forths… you know how it’s been. I’m not big on New Years resolutions, I never have been, but for 2014 I am going to try to enjoy the little things more.

Starting with walks in the woods with my girl.

The Setup

I used my boom arm to get the massive 110cm Apollo Orb as high over the centre of the shot as I could which gave us a quite a dreamy flattering light. Every gust of wind was terrifying though — I had to weigh the light stand down with everything I could find! To give the look of the fading sun bathing us in light from behind I used my new Rogue Gird camera right. I added an full CTO gel to match the colour of the sun.

My New Grid

For Christmas I got the Rogue FlashBender 3-in-1 Stacking Grid System. It's hands down the best designed grid system I've come across. It's got 2 interchangeable grids that you can use individually for a 45º or 25º spread — or you can stack them to get a super tight 16º! You can pay extra for gels specifically designed for the grid but I found that you can just jam any old gels between the flash & the grid  & it'll stay in place.

  • @Spadgerina Very nice work!

  • Light looks a little overpowered to me, but photos are still very nice and warm :)

  • I like that look on these shots myself :)

  • Andiek

Whether it is correct aperture? sorry just checking

  • Nope, well spotted — should be 2.0. I’ll fix that.

  • Spencer Jefferies

Awesome shots, the new grid looks the nuts too!

Rick, great photo. Btw, which boom arm did you use? Thx!

  • Thanks Arthur — it’s this one.
