Week Of Self

Last week I embarked on my 2nd week of self project and completed the first, albeit small, project of the year. The project, if you hadn’t guessed, was a week of self portraits, that sounds easy but it really isn’t. I did it along side Kym, Leah & Nat, three great girls. You should take some time to go and check out their shots, but before your wander off, take a look at what I came up with for the week.

“Sometimes I stay up so late that I have my morning coffee before I go to bed.”

Self #1

"If you wish to travel far and fast, travel light."

Self #2

“No matter how far you have gone on the wrong road, turn back”

Self #3

“A human being is only breath and shadow.”

Self #4

"Shoot the kids and drown the neighbours! We’ve got a winner!"

Self #5

"Tempers are wearing thin. Let’s hope some robot doesn’t kill everybody."

Self #7

P.S. I know I haven’t been blogging as much as I should have been but I am back on it now! Promise!

Outcome is awesome.

Muchos enjoyed lurking around the beautiful cathedral with you to take this on such a nice evening too :)

So let me ask lighting questions. You have a bare flash to the left? Why one with the softbox (or is that an umbrella?) and one bare? Great photo though, I love it!

Rick Nunn

Thanks guys.

RockersDelight – I wanted a soft even light on the left side of my face so I used an umbrella box, and then had a bare flash on the other side for some rim and a bit of harshness, It gives that nice outline on my right arm, you see?

I’m not really sure what you mean tw0phat, what negative effect is that angle having on the image? It was straight on, but after a couple of test shots I angled it a bit.

Nice. I just bought the Lowepro Fastpack 250 which holds my laptop and nikon all together. So far I freaking love it. The only thing I wish it had was room for my tripod. But I might tweak it out a bit.

Rick Nunn

I’ve got the Fastpack 250 too, it’s a pretty good bag, and then I’ve got a MASSIVE camera bag too that fits nearly all of my kit in it, including both bodies. I’ve got the Incase messenger bag as well which is nice, plus countless other bags :P

Rick Nunn

Gerry, Incase are amazing bags but they only make 2 very small camera bags right now, crumpler are pretty over priced, for camera stuff Lowepro know what’s what.

Steed, I didn’t even tell you, the Incase bags are faux furr lined! Pimp for life!

This turned out awesome considering your shit day & how quickly the location was found & the photo taken. I like how you are all in the dark & look like you are going to murder everyone.

Great shots as usual Rick, but I’m particularly fond of “…I stay up so late…” (intense!) and “…breath and shadow…”.

I often find designing for myself much harder than designing for someone else, usually because it’s harder to nail down exactly what I want to achieve or say. Are similar difficulties present when taking self-portraits? Was there anything in particular you were trying to achieve with these photos, or were they sometimes more of an exercise in the photographic process itself?

Adam

Nice shots Rick. Robot Panties is my favourite, I want to know what it all is SOOO badly, even more so now!

Rick

Thanks Robbie,

Yeah, it is the same sort of feeling when you are doing photos for yourself, and even harder again I think when you are actually in them as the main subject. As with design making something that just looks nice is relatively easy, but making something for a reason, to serve a purpose and send a message is harder. For this little project it was just about trying to match an image to some words, to try and represent some text as an image. Actually, one of the shots happened the other way round, the “…breath and shadow…” shot was something of a happy accident.

Adam,

You’ll just have to hold on tight, I am sure Ash will reveal her whole range of apparel soon enough! :)

#1 is my personal favorite – very dramatic, I like the blur of the background while still being able to make out the architecture, and your hoodie is wicked cool!
